Alumni Spotlight – Lukas Hagen
Lukas to Patch Clients:
• You have the best opportunity to take those first steps towards success.
• YOU have to be the one to make the changes. PATCH gives you the opportunity to make changes but you have to work the program.
• Just take it one day at a time and know that you are responsible for your actions and your actions only.
• Honesty and integrity go miles in this world and as corny as it is, be the bigger person when it comes down to it.
LUKAS TO PATCH SUPPORTERS:
• For those who are investing time and/or money into Project PATCH I want to thank you. I would not be who and where I am today without your support. For us kids living through PATCH as clients, if that’s what you want to call it, it can be life-changing for those who want it to be.
• What you are giving is an opportunity for a teen, who has maybe never had someone in their corner, to have a team that is committed to making sure that teen gets what they need to better themselves.
• The staff of PATCH rivals none, as I still consider some from PATCH mentors to this day.
ANNEKE TO PARENTS:
• Get the help your teen needs! For us this meant acknowledging that as his parents we could not provide what our son needed. Initially this admission felt like failure. Our pride was in the way before we could openly say, “we need help as a family”. Lukas needed time away from friends, family and circumstances, the space to process, and a strong structure that would enforce the positive new behaviors. Our whole family needed a hard reset and Patch provided each of us what we needed: Lukas with structured 24-7 care and us with time and space to heal and learn new skills too.
• Don’t journey the road of parenting a troubled teen alone. Find a place to talk with other parents in similar situations. It was therapeutic just being heard, and not feeling judged.
